Labs & Technologies

Division of Structural and Synthetic Biology

We plan to develop novel methods for the structural analysis of biomolecules and establish technologies to rationally design "control molecules".

It is necessary to know the structures of macromolecular or supramolecular complexes consisting of proteins and nucleic acids in clarifying the dynamic functions of biological systems. For this purpose, we will establish superb technology platform by integrating next-generation technologies using SPring-8 (synchrotron radiation)/SACLA (X-ray Free-Electron Laser), and advanced NMR spectrometer and spectroscopy techniques. We also act as the core facility for an NMR platform network connecting major domestic NMR centers.

We will develop middle- and high-molecular weight molecules (proteins and nucleic acids), as well as chemical compounds, that can be used to modulate cell and cellular activities. For this purpose, we plan to exploit not only proprietary technologies, such as expanded genetic codes, but also the state-of-the-art computing resources, such as K-computer, of RIKEN. We intend to contribute to drug discovery and the advancement of medical technologies through combining the activities of the group and division.
